Welcome to our August 2012 newsletter. Included are a few items of interest to bring you up to date with our group’s activities.
AGM Meeting Notice. The Annual General Meeting will be held at 5.30 pm on Friday 17th August in the Vise Cottage meeting room at the rear of the Pioneer Cottage, 5 Ballinger Crescent, Buderim. We appeal to all current and prospective members to attend.
Membership. You will remember that a new category of Life Membership was included on the 2011-12 membership renewal form. Thank you to those of you who took up this offer. As Life Members, you can ignore the membership renewal form included in this newsletter. Also, could everyone please encourage any of your friends who are interested in Buderim’s Tramway heritage & history to join us as members. The more members we have, the better we can achieve our goals.
Fund Raising – Buderim Street Party. The tramway committee decided to participate in the B150 Street Party with a HOT DOG STAND. Not only did we sell out of hot dogs within an hour, but the beautiful cupcakes and marshmallow cones made by Jean McGarvie and Maxina Williams were also a hot item selling out. Charlie Thurgood did a great job with the drinks making sure anyone who passed our stall had a drink in their hand. We came home with one can of coke. It was a very successful night raising $421.80 – fantastic.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Also thank you to those members who visited us on the night, especially Lester Hope who featured in one of the photos taken of our stall. The party atmosphere made for one great night which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Loco Display Site Central Buderim. Council is proceeding with the planning for the relocation.
The Botanical Program. A small group of volunteers meet occasionally to keep the entrance to the track looking neat & tidy. This is one area of our activities where we need more helpers. Please think about volunteering. Contact one of the committee whose contact details are in the header if you can help.
The Telco Road Heritage Tramway Walking Track. The work by a SCRC contractor on the track has again been delayed by wet conditions. Greg Strain intends to have installed: (i) the new raised culvert grates to replace the flush mounted ones, (ii) the two new seats at Mons Station and between 1400-1500m, (iii) the necessary repair work/drainage at the badly eroded area between 1200-1300m where run- off water from Mons Rd crosses, and (iv) new drainage and forming in the last cutting before Bird Wing Retreat between 1700-1800m. Most likely the SCRC maintenance workers, or energetic BPHTI maintenance workers, have removed the old tyres and a wheel which had been rolled down the hill into the gully at the 700m culvert area. Although the track has some moderately damp patches it is still being well used by walkers.
Grant application. We have applied for a Council Grant to help us cover our administrative costs for the next 3 years
Siena Primary School Track Visit A wonderful morning was had by all concerned when we hosted the children, teachers & parents from Grade 2 at Siena Primary School on the 31st of May. The visit was to help the school implement the local history strand of their curriculum. The children were very well behaved and showed great interest in the history of the tramway. They were full of interesting questions that showed they had been well prepared for the walk by their teachers. All in all, it was a very successful day and one we hope to repeat, not only with Siena school but with other local schools.
Mons Station site We are looking at the possibility of undertaking an archaeological dig at the site of Mons Station in the hope of finding some artefacts, such as items that may have been dropped by people as they waited for the tram. It is early days yet as we have to get permission from the authorities, and even if successful, that would take time. Local experts in this field, Gary & Dorothy Flanigan, have indicated their willingness to supervise the dig and we are hopeful that this venture will be successful.
New Web Site. We are developing a new website with the help of the staff at Red Lid Publishing. The new web address is http://www.buderim.qld.au/ On the left hand side of the home page there is a direct link to the Buderim-Palmwoods Tramway, so why not try it out for us. Any comments or suggestions on possible improvements gratefully received. Contact either Helene Cronin or Bruce Horton with your suggestions. Also we have a new email address for our group. We can be contacted on: [email protected]
Souvenir Cards. We had a 1000 souvenir cards printed to hand out to visitors who have walked, or intend to walk, the Heritage Walking Track. Check them out at the Old Post Office or Pioneer Cottage.
