Buderim has been an established and thriving mountainous community for 150 years this year and the Rotary Club of Buderim is celebrating with respect and dignity and a whole lot of laughs as they present the return of the Our Heritage in Verse, 2012 Bush Poets Concert at The Buderim War Memorial Hall on March 11th with the yarn-spinning banter unraveling from 2-6pm.

Australian bush poetry is in our heritage and brings a knowing smile and familiar feeling of nostalgia to those whose ears it falls upon. With 5 award winning, highly hilarious and very charismatic bush poets gracing the stage, the Our Heritage in Verse, 2012 Bush Poets Concert is on track to be even better than last year.

Part of what makes this year’s poetry event so special is that the Heritage Library is embracing the 150 year celebration of Buderim by displaying a photographic history of Buderim from the late 1800’s through to today with the story of families, industry, local trade and culture being depicted through the awe-inspiring photo collection. A digital display of the historical photos will be available to view at the event.

The avid Bush Poets who will spellbind poetry-loving event attendees, include 2006 Queensland Poetry Champion, Anita Reed, Woodford Folk Festival regular and renowned poet, Long John Best, 2005 Australian Bush Poet Champion, Ron Liekfelt, 2003 Australian Bush Poet Champion, Noel Stallard and written poetry competition queen, Glenny Palmer.

In addition, those attending will be entertained by the Sunshine Coast’s iconic musicians, Ken O’Flaherty and Billy Clemens, playing Australian bush and folk music.

The afternoon of side-splitting Australian Poetic entertainment costs $25 per person and $20 per concession. All proceeds from the concert will go to support the Springs of Hope Children’s Home, Maralal Samburu Kenya. Raffles with a fantastic array of prizes, tea, coffee and finger food will all be available at the event to assist with the Rotary Club of Buderim fundraising efforts.

A SUNDAY afternoon visit to Buderim’s Foote Sanctuary is more than a walk in the park for the Richardson family. The sanctuary grounds are embedded with rich personal history for this long-term Buderim family.

Three generations of the Richardson family: Lyn, Ian and Jennifer in Buderim’s Foote Sanctuary

Lyn Richardson is a Buderim local through and through and attended Buderim Mountain State School. Lyn had three children with her husband, and her daughter Margaret and son Ian still live in the area. The proud grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of three is the descendant of the original founders of Buderim’s Foote Sanctuary. In 1948 Lyn’s uncle Arnold Foote and father Hubert Foote gave 17 acres to the Buderim Community Centre for the formation of the park, which would commemorate the loyalty and sacrifice of the men of Buderim who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

It was originally named Eric Joseph Park in honour of their brothers killed in war. In 1963 the first Foote Sanctuary committee was formed to transform the forest in to the oasis it is today. Lyn also revealed there was a bush fire in 1966 which swept through a third of the sanctuary which highlighted the need for fire breaks. “In 1966 tree planting was well established with only indigenous varieties being used at first which had to be watered by hand from drums,” Lyn said. “As Buderim became a residential area, many retired folk made it their home and gave generous financial donations. Membership cost two shilling per year and rose to 80. “So now we have a place of quietness for folks to meet and enjoy the surroundings, it is heritage worth maintaining.”

Buderim’s past, present and immediate future is brilliantly captured in the B150 2012 Calendar which goes on sale this week.

As well as beautifully photographed scenes of flora, fauna and village life, the dates of all the main events throughout the 150th Anniversary year are highlighted.

There is also a strong reminder of the association between Buderim’s unique manager and mentor of town affairs, the War Memorial Community Association and its B150 Committee’s role in preparing the celebration of the sesqi –centenerary.

As well as being sold at the Old Post Office, copies are being offered in bulk to all of Buderim’s businesses and voluntary organisations.

One of the stated objects of B150 is to provide fundraising opportunities for BWMCA affiliated groups and for Buderim businesses.

To this end the calendars will be offered for sale in bulk numbers – 40 to a box – at $6 a copy to be sold on for a retail price of $10, thus creating a mark up profit to benefit the business houses and voluntary organisations who offer the calendar for sale to the public.

The calendar is also expected to fulfil a vital role of providing an excellent gift and “message from Buderim “role for posting to friends throughout Queensland, interstate and overseas. An envelope is provided with each calendar.

B150 Chair Simon Whittle said he especially wanted to thank the volunteers who have assisted in the production of the calendar and who will continue to assist by arranging the marketing.

Supplies of the calendar can be provided by Jenny Cant 5445 4048 and Robyn Edwards 5456 1943

The support and input of BWMCA affiliates is being sought to compile a timeline of Buderim’s community organisations over the past 150 years. The BWMCA has over 77 affiliate organisations. What is the their history? When were they founded? What have been their major achievements or milestones?

The B150 timeline project seeks to answer these questions and (with additional research) create an illustrated timeline of community organisations in Buderim, from the early years of the community in the 1870s, up to the present.

The research will provide the basis for an exhibition. The responses from BWMCA organisations will contribute to the big picture of community life in Buderim.

The Buderim Historical society is researching the history of organisations prior to the creation of the Buderim War memorial community Centre-, as it was originally known.

Henry Thompson, a student who has recently arrived from England for a gap year of community work and cricket and will be researching the Nambour chronicle to find out about past organisations. Records of old organisations are scarce, and some may only known through living memories. So the help of Buderim’s Living Legends is also being sought.

If you know of an Buderim organisation that no longer exists, or would like to contribute photos or stories of Buderim organisations, or have any questions about the B150 timeline project email B150timeline@gmail.com or phone Meredith Walker 5445 1914

The Buderim 150 year is a time for both celebration and reflection.

What are the stories that make up the 150 years of community spirit? What was Buderim like before European settlement and how was it used by Indigenous people of the Sunshine Coast, the Gubbi Gubbi? What is Buderim’s environmental and social history? Who are some of the people who have lived on Buderim?

These are some of the questions to be addressed in a series of newspaper articles that will run fortnightly in the Buderim Chronicle and other local newspapers during the B150 year.

Ideas for articles are being sought. What would you like to know about the history of Buderim? Perhaps you could provide a story? No aspect of history is out-of-bounds!

You can email your ideas to Buderimhistory@gmail.com or contact Sue Simon 5445 6634
