The town of Buderim was named after the Banksia Spinulosa collina, (commonly known as the Buderim Banksia or Hairpin Banksia), which grew along Buderim’s lower slopes when the area was being settled. This year, the Buderim Garden Club will be celebrating its 70th anniversary with a commemorative lunch on 26th August. Thanks to a grant from the Buderim Foundation, there will be a distribution of the Buderim Banksia plant to all garden club members and to organisations who will help to establish more of this beautiful plant in Buderim.
At the Australia Day parade, the BGC’s decorated float featuring large 70 figures won 1st prize with around 20 Garden Club members walking behind.
As an extra “70 years” celebration, a BGC group are going on a Murray River cruise in June, and a Buderim Garden Book is currently being compiled with stories of gardening “on Buderim”.
So far this year, there have been 16 new members, resulting in over 221 financial members.
Our activities are very diverse.
Volunteers enjoy monthly working bees at the Edna Walling gardens, and the “Garden Shedders” potter in the gardens adjacent to the Buderim Memorial Hall. We enjoy at least 3 Bus trips and 3 workshops a year
At the monthly meetings there’s a borrowing Library of Gardening books and magazines, a Seed Bank, a Cut Flower competition, a digital Photographic competition, and there is always a shared afternoon tea to round off a very pleasant afternoon – all free.
For sale we have plants, jams, honey, chutneys and of course raffle tickets. Manawee Nursery is a major contributor of our raffle prizes and Marjorie van Roy is our Patron. The annual Buderim Garden Festival will be held on 15th and 16th October this year at the Buderim War Memorial Hall, and comprises the Spring Flower Show, Six Open Gardens and a quality Plant Market.
Visitors are always welcome to meetings, and details and photos of the Club’s events can be seen on www.buderimgardenclub.com Bev Schouten
Buderim Garden Club is celebrating its 70th birthday this year, and to commemorate the year, the Club decided to make a gift of $10,000 to the Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens who are celebrating their 20th birthday. The Garden Club has been a donor to the Botanic Gardens since their inception and members feel a close bond with these gardens right on Buderim’s doorstep. The cheque was presented to Friends of MRBBG Secretary Bob Ducrou at the May meeting of the Garden Club by Club President Teddy Gove in the presence of over 100 Garden Club members. In thanking the Garden Club for their generous donation, Mr Ducrou said that the money would be used for the further development of the Whip Bird Walk which is a major attraction for children visiting the gardens. Mr Ducrou told the meeting that, when the many man-hours of the Friends’ volunteers were taken into account, the value of the donation would be multiplied many times over.
