SCARS is joining forces with 4 Paws again this year and holding their annual dog walk on Sunday the 28th August at Lake Kawana. The two animal rescue organisations work closely together to save unwanted cats and dogs on the Sunshine Coast. This year uniting to promote awareness of the plight of rescue animals and deliver key messages against backyard breeding and desexing companion animals to help alleviate the pressure on local rescues battling to continue saving the endless stream of cats and dogs coming through their doors.
The day starts at 8am with the public
invited to register and walk their dogs to help raise funds for the two animal welfare organisations. There will be food, coffee, face painting, loads of pet related stalls and some talks by local vets.
Registration for the walk will be a donation of $10 and can be paid on the day or online at www.sippycreek.com.au .
“It’s going to be a great day for families and dog owners but we are going to have some treats for cat owners and lovers too.” Ms Brischke said
“People don’t realise how much it costs to desex, microchip and vaccinate a pet! All of these extra costs are covered as part of the adoption fee when you adopt from SCARS.” Ms Brischke said.
Ms Brischke said SCARS, an independent, not-for-profit charity cared for up to 50 dogs and 70 cats at any one time and saved 1000 cats and dogs every year.
“SCARS relies heavily on government grants and the community to keep operating,” she said.
“The charity spends over $250,000 on vet care each year. Spending around $500 to rehome each animal – and that’s just the healthy ones.’
“We rely on community donations to care for these cats and dogs who may have been abandoned, surrendered or found wandering the streets.’
“All animals receive an initial vet check and care including heartworm, worming and flea prevention, vaccinations, food, shelter and care, de-sexing and micro-chipping. Adoption prices include all of this and registration with the local council.’
SCARS (Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society) was established in 1979 and has a non-euthanasia policy, focusing on finding forever homes for our four-legged friends and promoting responsible pet ownership.
About 120 volunteers help run the refuge which receives no recurrent government funding.
You can help by donating to the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge Society online or at any Westpac Bank (BSB 034 229 Account Number 100574).
